1. On March 2, post received an invitation from the Ministry of
Nature Protection via diplomatic note from the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs to participate in the international conference "Development
of Pistachio Forest Plantations: Problems and their Solutions." The
workshop will be conducted in the first half of May 2009. The
original text of the invitation follows.

The Ministry of Nature Protection of Turkmenistan and the National
Institute of Deserts, Flora and Fauna jointly with the Turkish
International Cooperation Agency (TICA) are planning to conduct
International scientific and practical conference "Development of
pistachio forest plantations: problems and their solutions." The
conference will be conducted in the first half of May 2009.
The goal of the conference is to discuss problems of the development
of pistachio forest plantations and forestry of Turkmenistan with
the purpose of implementation of national and international programs
on climate change mitigation, and to share experiences in this area.
The conference will be focused on the following topics:
-- assessment of natural pistachio plantations in Central Asia and
the value of the plantations for the preservation of the species'
genetic bank;
-- technology for creation of pistachio forest plantations and
methods of vegetative pistachio reproduction;
-- agro-technical methods for growing pistachios, methods of
irrigation, and use of fertilizers;
-- pest control and measures to protect generative organs of
pistachio;
-- restoration and management of forests as important factors of
climate stabilization.
Representatives of Central Asian states, Turkey, Iran, Syria, Israel
and USA are invited to the conference. We request that you pass
this information to interested organizations in your country.
All expenses associated with the travel, including round-trip
ticket, accommodation and meals, will be borne by participants.
