1. (SBU) This is another in a series of weekly reports on PKK
violence in Turkey. Our primary source is the Turkish General Staff
(TGS) website, which documents contacts and clashes with the PKK, as
well as casualties incurred.
2. (U) During the June 1-7, 2009, three security officials were
killed, including two in Sirnak Province on June 4 and 7 in landmine
explosions, while one soldier who was injured earlier died in
hospital. Six security officials were injured, including five in a
landmine explosions in Sirnak Province on June 4 and 7, and one in
clashes with the PKK in Sirnak Province on June 7. The total number
of security force casualties for the year through June 7, was 30
killed and 36 injured.
3. (U) During the same period, one PKKer was captured on June 7 in
Malatya Province. Two PKKers surrendered, including one in Sirnak
on June 6, and the other in Agri Province on June 6. According to
official TGS website figures, through the first week of June, the
number of PKK militants killed this year was 25, the number of those
captured was 25, and the number of those who surrendered was 54.
4. (U) During the reporting period no civilian died or was injured.
The total number of civilian casualties for the year through the end
of the first week of June, was five killed and nine wounded.
