1. (SBU) This is another in a series of weekly reports on PKK
violence in Turkey. Our primary source is the Turkish General Staff
(TGS) website, which documents contacts and clashes with the PKK, as
well as casualties incurred.
2. (U) During the April 24-30, 2009 reporting period, nine security
officials were killed. All were killed in an April 29 attack on an
armored personnel. PKK terrorists detonated an IED on the road
between Lice and Diyarbakir in Diyarbakir Province as the vehicle
passed. Another security official died when the PKK opened fire on
an outpost in Semdinli, Hakkari Province the same day. One security
personnel was injured by a PKK IED in Tunceli Province on April 28.
The total number of security force casualties for the year through
April 30, was 13 killed and ten injured.
3. (U) During the same period, no PKK terrorist was killed. Four
PKKers were captured in different provinces on four separate days.
Four PKKers surrendered in Silopi, Sirnak Province on April 27.
According to official TGS website figures, through the fourth week
of April, the number of PKK militants killed this year was ten, the
number of those captured was 19, and the number of those who
surrendered was 39.
4. (U) During the reporting period no civilian was hurt. The total
number of civilian casualties for the year through the end of the
fourth week of April, was one killed and five wounded.
