1. (SBU) This is another in a series of weekly reports on PKK
violence in Turkey. Our primary source is the Turkish General Staff
(TGS) website, which documents contacts and clashes with the PKK, as
well as casualties incurred.
2. (U) During the March 16-23, 2009, no security official was
injured or killed. The total number of security force casualties
for the year through March 23, was zero killed and zero injured.
3. (U) During the same period, two PKK terrorists were captured in
Van and Hakkari on March 16. One PKKer surrendered in Silopi,
Sirnak Province on March 17. According to official TGS website
figures, through the third week of March, the number of PKK
militants killed this year was one, the number of those captured was
12, and the number of those who surrendered was 18.
4. (U) During the reporting period no civilian died or injured but
the PKK kidnapped one citizen in Semdinli, Hakkari Province on March
17. The total number of civilian casualties for the year through
the end of the third week of March, was zero killed and five
wounded.
