1. (SBU) This is another in a series of weekly reports on PKK
violence in Turkey. Our primary source is the Turkish General Staff
(TGS) website, which documents contacts and clashes with the PKK, as
well as casualties incurred.
2. (U) During the December 1-7 period, eight security officials were
killed in clashes with the PKK, including one in Mardin province on
December 4, and seven in Tokat province on December 7. Seven
security officials were injured, including one by a PKK IED in
Sirnak province on December 1, and in clashes with the PKK in
Sirnak, Tokat and Batman provinces on December 4 and 7. The total
number of security force casualties for the year through December 7,
is 61 killed and 97 injured.
3. (U) During the same period, two PKKers were killed in clashes in
Sirnak province on December 4, and two surrendered in the Hakkari
province on December 6. According to official TGS website figures,
through the first week of December, the number of PKK militants
killed this year is 48, the number of those captured is 73. The
number of those who surrendered reached 121.
4. (U) During the reporting period no civilian was killed but one
was injured due to a PKK IED in Diyarbakir province on December 5.
The total number of civilian casualties for the year through the end
of the first week of December is 15 killed and 27 wounded.
