(S) Ambassador delivered reftel demarche to MFA
Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioglu on the afternoon of
September 17, as instructed. The Ambassador made clear that
Turkey's views, as relayed during July 2009 consultations,
had been taken into account in taking this decision.
Sinirlioglu took this on board and looked forward to closer
consultations at NATO as to what role Turkey might be asked
to play. DCM made the demarche -- at the same time -- to MFA
Deputy Director General Gulhan Ulutekin, who said that this
announcement would be followed with great interest at the
highest levels in Turkey.
