1. (U) On July 9, two Jordanian women were killed at the
hands of their brothers "in defense of family honor." In the
first case, the woman had previously been placed in
protective custody by Jordanian authorities. She was then
released into the custody of her brother in East Amman after
he promised that she would be protected. Shortly thereafter,
he fatally stabbed her and smashed her head with a rock. In
his confession, he said that he killed her because of her
"immoral" behavior, (i.e., talking to a man outside her
home.) Also on July 9, another woman was stabbed to death in
the Jordan River Valley by her 24-year-old brother, who
believed she was having an affair.
2. (U) These two most recent deaths bring the total number of
victims for this year to thirteen. In 2008, a total of
eighteen honor crimes were reported in Jordan.
