Radi Tarawneh, MOA Assistant Secretary General for Animal Welfare
Nasir Hawamdeh, and MOA Director for International Cooperation
Solaiman Rkaibat on June 24. Hadidi and Tarawneh reconfirmed
Jordanian support for measures to address global security and
promised to provide substantive comments on the "Five Principles for
Global Action on Food Safety" (ref B). Tarawneh reminded EmbOffs
that Jordan declared 2009 as the Year of Agriculture and commented
that the principles complemented Jordan's domestic priorities (ref
C). Hawamdeh added that food security remains one of Jordan's
biggest challenges, a situation exacerbated by a chronic lack of
water (ref D). He argued that enhanced cooperation was the only way
to address food shortages and encouraged U.S. and international
support for regional initiatives to promote food safety and
security.
