Economic Counselor delivered ref A points on June 8 to
Chairman of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) Khaled
Toukan and JAEC Commissioner Kamal Araj, urging the
Government of Jordan (GOJ) to support discussion of the
nuclear fuel bank idea at the June 15-18 IAEA Board of
Governors Meeting in Vienna. Toukan reaffirmed that Jordan
would support any international or regional fuel bank
initiative, as long as countries maintain their full rights
under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (ref B). He added
that Jordan hopes to be a supplier of uranium to such fuel
banks in the future. Araj plans to represent the GOJ at the
meeting.
