(C) In response to reftel demarche, MFA Director for Security
and Disarmament Nassima Baghli told us on May 10 that Algeria
would almost certainly support the candidacy of South African
Abdul Minty for Director General of the International Atomic
Energy Agency in the next round of voting. Baghli noted U.S.
support for Japanese Ambassador Yukiya Amano and said that he
was certainly a well-qualified candidate, but asserted that
Algeria would not change the support for Minty it expressed
in the initial round of voting.
