1. We delivered reftel to MFA U.S. Desk Officer Ali Drouiche
on February 28, asking for Algerian support for the
nomination of Judge Mark Painter to the UN Appeals Tribunal.
Drouiche gave no substantive comment, but was aware of the
Tribunal and ongoing efforts to systemize responses to staff
grievances within the UN. Driouche has recently transferred
back to Algiers from Geneva, where he worked extensively with
UN agencies. He undertook to convey our message to his
colleagues in multilateral affairs and inform us of any
subsequent response.
