UNCLAS ACCRA 000005 SIPDIS DEPT FOR AF/W E.O. 12958: N/A TAGS: GH KDEM PGOV PHUM PINS PREL SUBJECT: SUGGESTED PRESS STATEMENT ON GHANA'S ELECTION ¶1. (U) Embassy Accra recommends the Department use the following text for its press briefing on Ghana's elections: The United States congratulates the people of Ghana for their resolve and deep commitment to democratic processes as they participated in their nation's presidential and parliamentary elections. These elections, which a wide range of international and domestic observers have pronounced to be free, fair, and credible, have proven that Ghana is a country that can truly take its place among the community of democracies. We also commend Ghana's Electoral Commission for its dedication, perseverence, and professionalism in conducting these elections in a fair and impartial manner. We have sent our congratulations to President-elect John Evans Atta-Mills, with our best wishes for success in his commitment to be a President for all the people of Ghana. We have called on him to enhance Ghana's strong democratic traditions as he works to unify the nation and build consensus and confidence in established institutions that will serve all Ghanaians.
