(SBU) On September 23, Post received an invitation from Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, the CEO of Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company),for Special Envoy Todd Stern to speak at a session titled, "What's After Copenhagen" at the third World Future Energy Summit (WFES) in Abu Dhabi on January 19, 2010. On September 28, Masdar delivered an official invitation letter (text below) for Special Envoy Stern. Post will forward the complete invitation package to S/SECC. ¶2. (SBU) Note and Comment: The World Future Energy Summit (http://www.worldfutureenergysummit.com/),to be held January 18-21, is one of the largest international conferences on future energy technologies, climate change and sustainability. Energy Secretary Chu has been invited to be a keynote speaker. Then Energy Secretary Bodman spoke at the inaugural WFES in 2008. ¶3. (SBU) Note and Comment, Continued: The UAE is investing heavily in renewable technologies and related research in an effort to promote renewables production and consumption. Its recent efforts to be selected as the headquarters of IRENA indicate the political will behind the UAE's public commitments to developing, supporting and adopting sustainable energy technologies. As the head of Masdar, Dr. Al Jaber is the UAE's key renewable energy interlocutor and is also a member of the U.N. Secretary General's Advisory Group on Energy and Climate Change.
