(SBU) On September 23, Post received an invitation from Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, the CEO of Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company),for Special Envoy Todd Stern to speak at a session titled, "What's After Copenhagen" at the third World Future Energy Summit (WFES) in Abu Dhabi on January 19, 2010. On September 28, Masdar delivered an official invitation letter (text below) for Special Envoy Stern. Post will forward the complete invitation package to S/SECC. ¶2. (SBU) Note and Comment: The World Future Energy Summit (http://www.worldfutureenergysummit.com/),to be held January 18-21, is one of the largest international conferences on future energy technologies, climate change and sustainability. Energy Secretary Chu has been invited to be a keynote speaker. Then Energy Secretary Bodman spoke at the inaugural WFES in 2008. ¶3. (SBU) Note and Comment, Continued: The UAE is investing heavily in renewable technologies and related research in an effort to promote renewables production and consumption. Its recent efforts to be selected as the headquarters of IRENA indicate the political will behind the UAE's public commitments to developing, supporting and adopting sustainable energy technologies. As the head of Masdar, Dr. Al Jaber is the UAE's key renewable energy interlocutor and is also a member of the U.N. Secretary General's Advisory Group on Energy and Climate Change. (SBU) Begin text of invitation letter: September 27th, 2009 Mr Todd Stern Special Envoy on Climate Change and Renewable Energy United States of America Dear Mr Stern, Invitation to Speak at the World Future Energy Summit 2010 As part of our commitment to finding new clean energy solutions to the global energy requirements and in our efforts to help mitigate the effects of climate change, the UAE has held over the past two years The World Future Energy Summit, the premier platform for sustainable future energy solutions. As a wide-ranging and internationally recognised initiative, Masdar is developing and deploying clean energy technologies with the aim of establishing viable solutions for a sustainable future. As Abu Dhabi's vehicle in addressing the challenges of climate change and future energy security, the company has achieved great strides through its investments in clean technologies and development of renewable utilities. The World Future Energy Summit 2010 will be held in Abu Dhabi, UAE on January 18-21, 2010, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. This event, alongside Masdar, has attracted world and industry leaders, policy makers and researchers to develop actionable responses to future energy solutions, climate change and sustainability.
