1. (C) Ambassador delivered reftel demarche to UAE Assistant Foreign
Minister for Consular Affairs Sultan al-Qortasi September 16. While
evincing a sympathetic understanding of these humanitarian cases
involving American citizen in Iran and noting the strong US-UAE
bilateral relationship, Al-Qortasi pointed to the UAE's own difficult
relationship with Iran and said there was little the UAE could do to
influence Tehran in this matter and observed out that any UAE
intervention might be counterproductive.
