1. (C) CDA Delivered reftel demarche to Assistant Minister for
Political Affairs Tariq Hamdan on September 8. Hamdan discussed the
spectrum of regional issues of joint interest, but did not indicate
what the UAE was prepared to offer in terms of financial
contributions or specific diplomatic initiatives it might support in
the context of the upcoming Arab League Ministerial.
2. (C) On Somalia, Hamdan said that the UAEG position corresponded
with that of the USG, and indicated that Foreign Minister Abdullah
bin Zayed al Nahyan would seek to push the Arab League in a positive
direction at the September 9-10 meeting. Hamdan also asked what
countries have Somali populations which aid al Shabaab.
3. (C) Hamdan reiterated the UAE's strong support for the Palestinian
Authority under the leadership of President Mahmoud Abbas.
