CLASSIFIED BY AMBASSADOR RICHARD G. OLSON FOR REASONS 1.4 B AND D.
1. (C) During his July 13 majlis (a weekly public salon),Abu Dhabi
Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed (MbZ) told Abu Dhabi Health
Authority (HAAD) Chairman Dr. Ahmed Al Mazrouei and the Ambassador
that HAAD should work with Al Ain-based Oasis Hospital to send
volunteer Emirati doctors to Afghanistan (reftels). MbZ made the
decision following a briefing from Oasis CEO David Printy (an
American citizen) about Oasis' support for the CURE International
Hospital in Kabul. Among other support, Oasis has donated staff,
equipment and materials to its sister hospital in Kabul. (Note: CURE
International is also the owner of Oasis Hospital. End Note.)
2. (C) When the Ambassador pressed Al Mazrouei for a response to Ref
A request for Emirati doctors to serve in Pakistan, Al Mazrouei
(MbZ's designated POC on this issue) said that the option remains on
the table, but indicated the UAE would focus its near-term efforts on
establishing cooperation with Oasis.
3. (SBU) Note: Oasis Hospital in Al Ain is the oldest hospital in Abu
Dhabi Emirate and enjoys a deep personal relationship with the ruling
Al Nahyan family. It was opened in 1960 by an American couple with
the support of UAE founder and first President Sheikh Zayed (MbZ's
father). Focused (successfully) on reducing infant and maternal
mortality, MbZ and other senior Emirati officials were born there.
It was acquired by CURE International in 2006. End Note.
