SUBJECT: UAE NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISOR PLANS VISIT TO WASHINGTON
Classified by Ambassador Richard Olson, reasons 1.4 (b) and (d).
1. (S) Federal Director of State Security and UAE National Security
Advisor Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed al-Nahyan plans to visit Washington
from June 29 through July 1. His office has requested assistance
with appointments, which Post strongly endorses as key opportunities
to deepen positive engagement with the UAEG on sensitive regional
issues. Sheikh Hazza is an insider in ruling/royal circles in Abu
Dhabi with a prominent role in coordinating policy. Meetings of
particular interest include:
--- National Security Advisor General James Jones;
--- Deputy National Security Advisor for Homeland Security John
Brennan;
--- Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano;
--- Special Envoy for the Middle East George Mitchell (Hazza
participated in February 28 meetings in Abu Dhabi);
--- Special Advisor for the Gulf and Southwest Asia Dennis Ross
(Hazza joined April 30 meetings in Abu Dhabi);
--- Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard
Holbrooke;
--- Acting A/S of State for NEA Jeff Feltman.
2. (S/NF) GRPO is taking the lead in scheduling for this visit.
Post looks forward to assisting with coordination of a successful set
of meetings.
