(SBU) Poloff discussed the issue of UNSCR-imposed travel bans on designated Iranian officials (reftels) with MFA Multilateral Affairs Officer Nada Kreuger on May 7, 2008. Kreuger explained that Namibia had hosted a team from the UN Al-Qaida and Taliban Sanctions Committee (1267 Committee) in late 2006/early 2007 to review the GRN's mechanisms for screening individuals subject to travel restrictions. Since that visit, said Kreuger, the GRN has improved its systems for updating its immigration lists to include individuals on UN sanctions lists. ¶2. (SBU) Kreuger said that the MFA shared all the UN sanctions lists with relevant GRN ministries involved in immigration and law enforcement. Asked what the GRN would do if one of the 40 Iranian individuals subject to travel restrictions under UNSCRs 1737, 1747, and 1803 attempted to travel to Namibia, she believed that any of them would be denied entry - in other words, a de facto travel ban.
