Poland's support for Turkish accession to the EU remains
unchanged in the aftermath of the AKP court case. Emboff
delivered reftel demarche to Piotr Siebeneichen, MFA
Counselor in the European Department. Siebeneichen said that
Poland's position was in agreement with the U.S. He noted
that Poland participates with the Scandinavian countries, the
UK and Estonia in a pro-accession working group that meets
regularly in Talinn and London. He concluded that despite
the close of the AKP case, the larger issues are still in
play and that continued islamization of Turkey will push
countries such as Spain and France to try to further slow or
suspend the accession process.
