1. (C) Warsaw has no intention of participating in the
November 30 nuclear conference in Iran. Juliusz Gojlo,
Deputy Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs'
Department of Africa and the Middle East, said October 29
that Poland fully respected its obligations under various
UNSC resolutions regarding Iran and agreed with the U.S. view
that attendance at the conference would send mixed signals to
Tehran authorities. He emphasized that there was "no
contradiction between the U.S. and Polish positions" on this
issue.
2. (C) Thus far, the Iranian EMBASSY here has not approached
the GOP to encourage participation in the conference. Gojlo
said he would ensure that our views will be circulated
widely, although he asserted that even privately employed
scientists and technicians were well aware of the
prohibitions against dealing with Iran. Gojlo added that the
Iranian Ambassador to Warsaw had visited Poland's Atomic
Energy Agency last year, but there was no bilateral
cooperation on nuclear issues.
