Purlys told Post July 25 that he expects Lithuania will
continue to support Turkey's EU accession process even if its
Constitutional Court bans the ruling Justice and Development
Party (reftel). He predicted some EU member states will cite
this court case as a reason to halt Turkey's EU accession but
that Lithuania will attempt to form a consensus among EU
members that keeps the process going. Purlys characterized
Turkey as a valuable NATO ally and strategic energy partner
and said it is in the EU's interest to keep Turkey oriented
toward the West.
