Antanaviciene told Post July 25 that although Lithuania does
not consider isolation the only way to deal with Syria,
increased EU engagement will empower the SARG if it is not
accompanied by strong demands to cease the Syrian role in
sponsoring terrorism, facilitating the travel of terrorists
into Iraq, and attempting to destabilize its neighbors to the
south, Lebanon and Israel. She noted recent U.S. engagement
with Iran as a parallel example. On a related note,
Antanaviciene added that the GOL is mulling a request by the
Iranian Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs for a visit to
Lithuania this fall, but she pledged to consult with the
United States before any decision is made.
