1. Irena Skardziuviene, head of the MFA's UN and Global
Policy division, told us on June 2 that the GOL has not
decided which candidate to support for IOM Director General.
She noted that the GOL supports the idea of a two term limit
and therefore does not support the incumbent.
2. Skardziuviene added that the GOL will propose a candidate
for the Director General of UNESCO, their current ambassador
to UNESCO and Vice President of UNESCO's Executive Council
Ina Marciulionyte. She said that although the GOL's
candidate is not official yet, she already has the support of
the other Baltic countries. She added that, although she
understood that in general the USG does not engage in trading
votes for candidates, the GOL would agree to support the
USG's candidate for the IOM DG if the USG supported the GOL's
candidate for UNESCO. We told her that her understanding was
correct, but said we would consider Ambassador
Marciulionyte's candidacy.
