1. (SBU) As reported in ref. A, Monsignor Franco Coppola,
Director for the Middle East at the Holy See Secretariat of
State, informed A/DCM on July 4 that the Holy See Nuncio in
Teheran, Archbishop Jean Paul Gobel, has sent a diplomatic note
to the Government of Iran requesting a meeting to discuss the
disappearance of US citizen Robert Levinson (reftel B). Coppola
did not have information yet on any GOI response to the Nuncio's
note.
2. (C) Coppola also said that the Swiss Ambassador in Iran had
told Gobel that it was likely that Levinson was kidnapped by
contraband mafias. The Swiss Ambassador added that he did not
think the GOI is behind Levinson's disappearance.
3. (SBU) Post will continue to follow-up with the Holy See for
further updates.
