SUBJECT: NY PROPERTY TAX: LIBERIA NEAR FINAL SETTLEMENT
WITH CITY OF NEW ROCHELLE
Liberian PermRep Amb. Nathaniel Barnes provided USUN with a
July 8 update on the City of New Rochelle (NR) lawsuit to
recover property taxes and water/sewer charges from the LMUN
for the official residence at 20 Lyncroft Road. Amb. Barnes
reported that problems with NR "were basically resolved." He
said that his mission secured the legal services of Clifford
Chance and had engaged in a full day of mediation with NR,
resulting in an agreement that (1) the Amb. would move into
the property as of July 1 (which he has done); (2) that NR
would remove the property from its tax rolls, and that (3)
the Liberian government would pay NR $100K, contingent on the
sale of the Liberian Consul General's residence in the City
of Yonkers, NY. Amb. Barnes said that the lawyers were
working on the final language but that the CG's property had
been listed with Sotheby's and that proceeds from the sale
(which had to be completed within 18 months) would go to pay
NR, Yonkers, and to refurbish the residence at 20 Lyncroft
Road in NR.
