SUMMARY: On November 5, 2008, the United Nations General Assembly's Sixth Committee adopted draft resolutions on observer status for the South Centre and the University for Peace. Both resolutions were adopted by consensus. END SUMMARY. -------------- Observer Status for the South Centre: UNGA Agenda Item 151 -------------- ¶2. The delegation of Tanzania had previously introduced the South Centre observer status resolution to the Sixth Committee on October 21st, 2008. The South Centre is an intergovernmental organization established in 1994 by an intergovernmental agreement, which is deposited with the UN Secretary-General. The South Centre researches and provides support for the South in its development, trade technology, and intellectual property policies. On November 5, 2008, Tanzania reiterated its support, as well as its 29 co-sponsors, and called for adoption of the draft resolution. The resolution was adopted by consensus. -------------- Observer Status for the University of Peace: UNGA Agenda Item 153 -------------- ¶3. Ambassador Jorge Urbina, Permanent Representative of Costa Rica, introduced the University for Peace for observer status resolution before the Sixth Committee on October 21st, 2008. Urbina described the University as an intergovernmental organization headquartered in San Jose, Costa Rica, specializing in "the great universal task of educating for peace." On November 5, 2008, Costa Rica reiterated its support, as well as its 10 co-sponsors, and called for adoption of the draft resolution. The resolution was adopted by consensus. Khalilzad
