(C) The GOJ is not optimistic about the situation in KENYA
over the short-term, Foreign Ministry Director General for
African Affairs and the Prime Minister's Personal
Representative for Africa Shuichiro Megata told EMIN January
9. Megata noted the difficulty of reconciling the two sides
and lamented the continuing unrest in a country that had been
one of the bright spots in Africa. He stated Japan would be
monitoring the situation closely and requested the U.S. share
any relevant information with the GOJ. He added his
appreciation for the work the US, and especially A/S Frazer,
has been doing to help quiet and resolve the situation.
