1. LEAD STORIES: Top stories on Thursday morning
included the decision on Wednesday by the Tokyo
Metropolitan Assembly's budget panel to inject an
additional 40 billion yen into ShinGinko Tokyo, the
indebted bank established at the initiative of the
Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
2. "Political Situation in Pakistan Remains Bleak" The
business-oriented Nikkei editorialized (3/27): "A new
Pakistani prime minister took office on March 25
following the general elections in February and the
launch of a new parliament earlier this month. We
welcome this progress toward democracy in Pakistan,
which was shaken by the declaration of a state of
emergency and the assassination of former Prime
Minister Bhutto. However, the nation is still far from
stable. Pakistan is a nuclear weapons state, and it
stands on the front line of the ongoing global war on
terrorism. Political unrest in the country should not
hamper international efforts to prevent nuclear
proliferation and terrorism."
