1. (C) Japan fully supports the appointment of Norwegian
Political Director Kai Eide to be UN Secretary General Ban
Ki-moon's Special Representative for Afghanistan, and will
take advantage of any opportunity that presents itself to
make that support known, according to MOFA Second Middle East
Division Principal Deputy Director Motosada Matano. Matano
also advised that Deputy Foreign Minister for Political
Affairs Kenichiro Sasae plans to represent Japan at the NATO
Summit at Bucharest and looks forward to meeting with Eide at
that time. In addition, Sasae is making plans to visit Kabul
either en route or on his return journey from Bucharest.
