1. (C) UN Special Advisor for Burma Ibrahim Gambari, in Tokyo
for consultations with Japanese officials, telephoned Deputy
Chief of Mission February 27 to thank Embassy for conveying
to him the previous evening ref points regarding the Treasury
Department's designation under U.S. sanctions law of Steven
Law. He found the points "very helpful." He also wished to
convey his thanks and gratitude to Ambassador Hume for his
assistance and for hosting an excellent and productive dinner.
2. (C) Gambari informed DCM that he learned from his office
this morning that he has been granted permission to visit
Burma from March 6 through March 9. However, it is his
desire to stay longer so he can meet as many people as
possible and realize tangible results. Accordingly, once he
arrives, he plans to seek to extend his stay.
3. (C) Gambari said he would be very grateful for any
readout or situation report our mission in Rangoon can
provide him about the current situation in Burma. He will be
in Tokyo through Friday, February 29, and Embassy will be
pleased to pass to him any information the Department or
Embassy Rangoon can provide.
