1. LEAD STORIES: Top stories on Tuesday morning
included a decline this year in foreign direct
investment in Japan.
2. "Attacks on Gaza to Lead to Chain of Retaliation?"
The moderate Yomiuri editorialized (12/30): "Will they
fall into a chain of retaliation again?... If the
military confrontation between Israel and Hamas
escalates, peace in the Middle East will become remote
and the overall situation in the region will become
more uncertain. Both Israel and Hamas should
immediately stop their military actions. The
international community, including the U.S., Europe,
and Arab nations, needs to seek ways to stop
hostilities and apply pressure on them."
