CHANGE CONFERENCE
1. LEAD STORIES: Top stories in Monday morning papers
included the results of weekend polls that showed
falling support for Prime Minister Aso.
2. "Progress Needed for Agreement Next Year" The
liberal Asahi editorialized (12/7): "...If nations use
the current economic turmoil as an excuse to slow the
pace of reducing their greenhouse gas emissions, a
global catastrophe will be unavoidable. We need to move
the current debate on climate change toward an
agreement next year through a shared sense of crisis
and the view that the promotion of low-carbon
businesses will help economies recover.... There is a
push for such efforts. A new administration led by
President-elect Obama, who is enthusiastic about
halting global warning, will be launched in the U.S.,
the world's largest emitter."
