1. (SBU) Ministry of Defense (MOD) officials told EconOff
August 22 that the four companies that are banned
indefinitely from selling to the Japanese Self Defense Forces
were notified directly and the information was published on
the MOD website. Additionally, Post found local press
stories commenting on the MOD website announcement banning
these firms from selling as well as subsequent stories on
decline in the value of one of the company's stock resulting
from the news.
2. (SBU) One official told EconOff the MOD policy toward
Yamada Corporation, Kyokuto Boeki Kaisha, Fuji Industries and
Science Technology Trading has not changed. The official
said he did not know why these companies continue to request
items from the U.S. and speculated they may have commercial
or other ministry customers. The GOJ, he said, is not
concerned if these companies sell to other companies, which
in turn sell to MOD.
3. (SBU) Post understands the National Police Agency is
currently investigating Yamada Corporation and Science
Technology Trading, Inc. We are checking with police on the
status of Fuji Industries and Kyokuto Boeki Kaisha.
