1. LEAD STORIES: Front-page items on Friday morning
included press remarks on Thursday by Secretary of
Defense Gates, during which he reportedly urged Russia
to abide by its commitment to cease all military
activities in Georgia.
2. "Implementation of Ceasefire Agreement
Indispensable" The business-oriented Nikkei
editorialized (8/15): "Although Russia and Georgia
accepted a ceasefire agreement brokered by French
President Sarkozy, the agreement has apparently not
been fully implemented. The agreement will be of no
practical use if the parties fail to fulfill their
commitments.... In order to end the current conflict,
steady implementation of the agreement is needed....
The U.S. and Russia should not end their cooperation on
such issues as the war on terrorism and Iran's nuclear
program."
