SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - CHINA-TIBET TALKS
¶1. LEAD STORIES: Front-page items on Tuesday morning
included the explosions on two public buses in Kunming,
Yunnan Province, China, on Monday that killed at least
two people and wounded 14 others.
¶2. "Meaningful Results Produced at China-Tibet Talks?"
The moderate Yomiuri editorialized (7/22): "Two
meetings have been held between the Chinese government
and the Tibetan government-in-exile ahead of the
Beijing Olympics, which open on August 8.... The
pressure from the international community, which
emphasized the need for dialogue following the unrest
in Tibet and surrounding provinces in March, helped
lead to the meetings. However, as far as we can tell,
the meetings have failed to realize fundamental
solutions to the Tibetan issue. Some observers are of
the opinion that the meetings were used by Beijing to
buy a temporary peace before the Olympics.... The
international community's interest in Tibet has been
declining since the start of the dialogue between China
and Tibet. The G8 summit did not take the issue up for
discussion, nor did the U.S.-China summit."
¶3. "ASEAN Urges Burma to Release Aung San Suu Kyi" The
moderate Yomiuri's correspondent report from Singapore
stated (7/22): "The ASEAN foreign ministerial held on
Monday in Singapore called for the release of
democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been under
house arrest by the Burmese junta. The association
released a joint statement saying that the Burmese
government should take further steps towards a peaceful
transition to democracy.... Although ASEAN plans to
launch a new community by 2015 based on human rights
and other basic values, the Burmese junta is becoming a
burden on the association."
