1. LEAD STORIES: Front-page items on Thursday morning
include a "busjacking" by a 14-year-old boy.
2. "Temporary Fix Not Enough" The liberal Mainichi
editorialized (7/17): "Will the financial instability
in the U.S. be alleviated? Secretary of the Treasury
Paulson announced emergency measures to address the
concern about a possible resurgence of the financial
crisis caused by the subprime loan problem. Although
the measures include bold steps, such as the rescue of
financial institutions using taxpayer money, the
stability that was regained was only momentary.... We
hope the U.S. government will not be bound by
short-term political considerations and turn its back
to the market but will instead immediately carry out
drastic measures."
