(C) Japan will be represented at the June 24 Berlin
Conference in Support of Palestinian Civil Police and the
Rule of Law by MOFA Middle Eastern and African Affairs Bureau
Deputy Director General Shinsuke Sugiyama, according to First
Middle East Division Deputy Director Hideaki Adachi. Foreign
Minister Koumura will be unavailable as he will be preparing
for the G8 Foreign Ministers meeting which will take place
June 26 in Kyoto. Adachi also told us it is unlikely Japan
will announce any new assistance at the conference, but noted
that Japan hopes to host a Foreign Ministerial meeting in
Tokyo between Israel, Jordan, and the Palestinian Authority
on July 2-3 to further advance Japan's "Corridor for Peace
and Prosperity" initiative. (NOTE: According to a contact at
the Israeli Embassy, FM Livni will not be able to attend, and
Environment Minister Gideon Ezra will come to Tokyo in her
stead. END NOTE.)
