LEAD STORIES: Top stories this morning included the Japanese Supreme Court order issued on Tuesday to a convicted former gangster to repay to the plaintiffs not only the extortionate interest rate he charged but also the principal of the loans. ¶2. "U.S., EU Split over Global Warming" The business- oriented Nikkei's report from Slovenia stated (6/11): "The differences between the U.S. and EU over post-Kyoto measures against global warming are growing. The gap between the two sides remained at the U.S.-EU summit held in Slovenia on Tuesday, as the U.S. placed priority on participation by major emitters, while the EU insisted on significant cuts in emissions." ¶3. "Information Disclosure Will Help Reconstruction" The conservative Sankei editorialized (6/11): "...The massive earthquake in Sichuan Province, a horrible natural disaster, has brought about a change in China, which will host the Olympics this summer. Support for the quake victims from within the country and around the world was swift, as detailed information about the devastation was disseminated with unusual speed.... However, Chinese authorities have not yet provided sufficient information about the earthquake's impact on nuclear facilities in Sichuan Province.... It will likely take three to five years to rebuild the region. Reconstruction could be accelerated, though, if China were to learn the lessons from other nations that have suffered devastating disasters and break with its tendencies toward single-party dictatorship in favor of information disclosure."
