AHMADINEJAD'S VISIT TO INDIA, PAKISTAN
1. LEAD STORIES: All Wednesday morning papers gave
front-page coverage to the ruling coalition's plan to
enact legislation to reinstate gasoline surcharges for
road construction, as well as the announcement by a
state-run institution that the deadly H5N1 strain of
avian influenza was detected in dead swans found in
northern Japan.
2. "Iran's Presence Growing in South Asia" On Iranian
President Ahmadinejad's recent visit to Pakistan and
India, a Tehran correspondent for the top-circulation,
moderate Yomiuri wrote (4/30): "Ahmadinejad is
determined to block U.S. attempts to encircle his
country over nuclear issues by enhancing Tehran's ties
with New Delhi and Islamabad through the construction
of a pipeline network shipping natural gas to India via
Pakistan.... The pipeline project with the two
neighbors is becoming increasingly important for Iran,
given intensified U.S. pressure on regional countries
not to undertake projects with Iran. A start of the
project would enable Iran to claim that U.S. pressure
is not working."
