1. LEAD STORIES: Front-page reports in Friday morning
papers included a GOJ plan to give $100 million in
emergency assistance to developing nations in Africa
and other areas in view of rising food prices.
2. "Self-Restraint Necessary in Supporting Beijing
Olympics" The liberal Asahi editorialized (4/25):
"....It is the sincere hope of many people in Japan and
the rest of the world that the Beijing Olympics will
succeed. However, there is also an international
consensus that the global community should not remain
silent about the Chinese government's crackdown on
monks and residents of Tibet....It is worrisome that
many Chinese people are becoming increasingly
displeased with foreign nations' criticism of China.
They are rushing into supermarkets of European goods
and STAGING boycotts on foreign products....Freedom of
speech and expression should be ensured. However, those
who protest the Olympic torch relay should exercise
self-restraint."
