TAGS: PREL NATO GG RS UZ
SUBJECT: UZBEKISTAN STAYING CLEAR OF ABKHAZIA/SOUTH OSSETIA
DISPUTE
REF: STATE 40673
Classified By: P/E Chief Ted Burkhalter; reasons 1.4 (b, d).
(C) P/E Chief delivered reftel demarche April 23 to Ismat
Faizullaev, head of the MFA's U.S. Affairs Section.
Faizullaev said that Uzbekistan preferred not to be caught
between the U.S. and Russia on this issue. He said that this
was related to the Kosovo dispute and that "Uzbekistan is
only a small country." P/E Chief pressed, asking whether
sitting idly might not encourage similar Russian behavior in
future crises in the former Soviet Union. Faizullaev had no
further substantive comment but promised to pass the request
to more senior MFA officials.
