1. (U) On February 28, the Swedish Security Police arrested
three adult males on suspicion of financing terrorist
operations in Somalia. The arrests were coordinated with the
Norwegian Security Police, who simultaneously arrested
suspects in Oslo. The three men are Swedish citizens, but
migrated from Somalia in the early 1990s. Two of the
suspects are now in official custody waiting to be tried.
The third was released due to lack of evidence, but is still
under police investigation.
2. (U) One of the arrested Somali-Swedes runs a money
transfer system and previously was arrested in November 2007
on suspicion of financing radical Islamists in Somalia.
During the investigation, the Swedish Police found a map
pinpointing the house of Lars Vilks, the cartoonist who
depicted the prophet Mohammed as a dog. The 42-year old
suspect eventually was released and no charges were made.
Additional information will follow septel.
