REF: 08 STATE 54684

1. For Embassies Vienna and Monrovia:
Please deliver the following letters to Foreign Minister
Plassnik of Austria and Foreign Minister King-Akerele of
Liberia. No signed originals will be forthcoming. Reftel
gives details about the June 19 Security Council
thematic debate on sexual violence in conflict and
post-conflict situations, which the Secretary will chair.

2. BEGIN TEXT OF LETTER TO FM PLASSNIK:

Dear Madam Minister:

You may know that I have invited the foreign ministers of
the Security Council to a June 19 Security Council public
thematic debate on sexual violence in conflict and
post-conflict situations. I am pleased to be chairing
that meeting, as the Women Leaders Working Group has
always placed a high priority on addressing issues related
to women, peace, and security. I hope that the June 19
Security Council debate will provide additional insights
on how to address the problem of sexual violence in
situations of armed conflict.

Given your role as co-chair of the Women Leaders Working
Group, I would be very pleased if you would consider
attending the June 19 event and delivering remarks.
Your thoughts on issues relating to women and conflict
situations would be contribute greatly to the discussion.

Sincerely,
Condoleezza Rice
