PIRACY RESOLUTION
1. The Department would like to extend its congratulations
and express its gratitude to USUN for its successful effort
to achieve a UN Security Council resolution to combat piracy
off the Somali coast. USUN's dedication and creativity in
negotiating this resolution, which was a high priority for
the U.S. government, will help ensure that humanitarian
assistance can reach those who urgently need it in Somalia.
We would especially like to recognize the work
of Jesse Levinson and James Donovan, CMD U.S. Coast Guard
(RET.),in concluding the successful negotiations on this
resolution. Ambassador Khalilzad's and Ambassador Wolff's
personal involvement to break several impasses
were vital and greatly appreciated. Congratulations once
again!
