(C) MOFAT Deputy Director of the Human Rights and Social
Affairs Division Park Yu-ri told POLOFF on September 5 that
the ROK would "find it impossible to host" an Asia Pacific
Democracy Partnership (APDP) senior officials' meeting this
year (reftel). Park said the ROK appreciates the USG's
initiative to promote democracy in the Asia Pacific region
and wants to play an appropriate role, but cannot host a
meeting at this time because of some countries' reservations
about the nature of the APDP. Asked which countries had
voiced reservations, Park named only Indonesia, saying
Indonesia was concerned there would be too much overlap
between the APDP and the Bali Democracy Forum. Park said
that if another country were to host the senior officials'
meeting it is likely the ROK would participate.
