1. (C) Hong Sang-hun, MOFAT Deputy Director for Humanitarian
Assistance, said on June 9 that the ROK had urged Burma to
fully implement measures permitting humanitarian assistance
personnel, regardless of nationality, to travel to areas
affected by Cyclone Nargis in dire need of relief assistance.
Mr. Hong noted that the first time the ROK proposed to
provide an aid relief team, the Burmese authorities denied
the request, but that when the ROK again proposed the offer,
Burmese officials accepted. The team, comprised of 30
medical specialists working near Rangoon, entered Burma on
June 5.
2. (C) Mr. Hong added later that the ROK sent another team of
13 medical officials to Burma on June 13. The officials were
employees of the Korean National Police Agency.
