(C) On February 20, the Ambassador met with Yemeni Foreign
Minister Abu Bakr al-Qirbi and discussed Yemen's proactive
participation in efforts to stablize Somalia. Al-Qirbi said
the issue of Somalia had been overshadowed recently by events
in lebanon and Palestine, but that the ROYG had been in
contact with counterparts in Saudi Arabia, Oman and Djibouti
to reinvigorate their engagement. Al-Qirbi said the four
countries were considering measures to remove the exiled
Somali Islamic Courts from Eritrea, where they continue to
exert a negative influence on Somalia. Al-Qirbi said Saudi
Arabia was arranging a meeting on the subject. Post will
schedule a follow-up meeting to deliver reftel demarche on
Somalia on February 23 or 24.
