(C) POL/E Chief and his British counterpart delivered reftel demarche to MFA Assistant Deputy Minister Khaled al-Akwa on January 29. The representative of HMG passed al-Akwa an informal copy of the invitation and promised to follow up with a formal copy. (Note: The original formal invitation was passed to the Foreign Ministry on December 17, but al-Akwa appeared unaware of it. End Note.) Al-Akwa noted that he was familiar with the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) and believed that ROYG officials had attended previous meetings. He asked what level of representation was expected at the meeting and if ministries other than the Foreign Ministry were invited to attend. POL/E Chief provided him information from reftel. Al-Akwa agreed to pursue the issue. ¶2. (C) Comment. Al-Akwa's tone indicated to POL/E Chief that he intends to follow through. Post expects that the ROYG will send a delegation to the meeting.
