(C) POLOFF delivered reftel points encouraging high level
attendance and significant contributions in support of
Palestinian civil police and rule of law at the Berlin
conference June 24 to MFA MEPP Desk Officer Daniele Bosio
June 11. Bosio said FM Frattini was unable to attend due to
scheduling conflicts and that MFA Under Secretary for the
Middle East Stefania Craxi would lead the Italian delegation.
Bosio said the Italian government was still finalizing its
contribution, but hoped to be able to pledge at least 1.3
million euros in new money at the conference. He also said
the delegation would make a commitment to earmark for the
Palestinian Authority security forces a portion - around
eight million euros - of their eighty million euro pledge
which they made at the December Paris donors conference.
Bosio added that both these pledges were in addition to the
over 200 million euros Italy had already programmed for
Palestinian assistance in 2007-2009.
