Officer Alberto La Bella January 7 and to UN Desk Officer
Gabriella Biondi January 10. POLOFF requested Italy provide
support for Sudan's Joint-Integrated Units (JIUs) through the
UN Mission in Sudan's JIU support cell. Both La Bella and
Biondi said Italy agreed with the U.S. on the importance of
fully-deployed JIUs to implementation of the Comprehensive
Peace Agreement. They said they would study the request, but
could not yet offer a response.
